Goethe busied himself with the study of air pressure using such a devise.
The position of the water in the glass tube reliably indicates all changes in air pressure.


These gadgets used to freak me out as a kid when there were tornado warnings. When the water started coming out of the spout, I thought that meant there was a tornado about to hit us.
